How server-free compression works
The image is redrawn onto a canvas inside your browser and re-encoded as a JPEG at the quality you choose. Reducing the maximum width is what saves the most weight: a 4000 px phone photo rescaled to 1920 px can drop from several megabytes to a few hundred KB with no visible loss on screen.
Because everything happens on your device, no photo is uploaded to any server: it is the most private way to compress documents, personal photos or work images. The result is always downloaded as a JPG, the most efficient format for photographs.
