Convert image formats
Turn an image from WebP to JPG, from PNG to JPG, or any combination of JPG, PNG and WebP. The conversion happens in your browser, without uploading the file anywhere.
The iPhone HEIC format cannot be read by browsers; convert it first on the phone itself (Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible).
When each format suits you
There's no image format that's simply "better" than the rest: each is designed for something. Choosing well is the difference between a sharp, light image and a blurry or needlessly heavy one. These are the four you'll use almost all the time.
- JPG. The king of photographs. It compresses images with many colours and gradients very well, at the cost of a loss in quality that's nearly imperceptible. It can't store transparent areas.
- PNG. Ideal for logos, screenshots, graphics with text or any image that needs a transparent background. It loses no quality, but weighs more than JPG for photos.
- WebP. A modern format from Google that achieves the same look as JPG or PNG while taking up considerably less. Perfect for fast websites; every current browser understands it.
- GIF. Today it's mostly reserved for short animations, since it handles only 256 colours and performs poorly for photos.
The rule of thumb
If it's a photograph, JPG or WebP. If you need transparency or it's a graphic with crisp lines and text, PNG. And if your goal is a website that flies, WebP almost always wins. Converting between formats lets you, for example, turn a PNG screenshot that was too heavy to attach into a JPG, or strip the background from a logo by saving it as PNG.
