The rules of Roman numerals
Roman numerals are written by combining seven symbols: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000). Symbols are added from largest to smallest, but a smaller symbol placed before a larger one is subtracted: IV is 4, IX is 9, XL is 40 and CM is 900. The same symbol cannot be repeated more than three times in a row, which is why 4 is not written IIII.
Standard notation represents numbers from 1 to 3999. They are still used for centuries (the 21st century), the names of kings and popes (Henry VIII), book chapters and events such as the Super Bowl.
